The Internet connects people, organizations, companies, and institutions worldwide. In recent years, this interconnectivity has been challenged by state actors intentionally and unintentionally. Regulations, technical shortcomings, and more can lead to parts of the internet being almost or completely inaccessible for some people (usually bound by geographical location). This process is referred to as Internet Fragmentation.
Internet fragmentation has also reached the TLS protocol in various ways. Next to the analysis of the SNI extension and blocking of the ESNI/ECH extension China specifies and mandates the use of government-endorsed cipher suites not or only partially supported in the rest of the world. In this thesis, you will analyze and evaluate TLS libraries' and browsers' support of these cipher suites. You will also analyze how TLS servers in China handle TLS connections with and without these cipher suites being supported.
