Computer Science in Paderborn

The Department of Computer Science at Paderborn University has a broad and fundamental
research foundation; it is deeply integrated within the university, with the scientific
community, as well as with industry partners. 18 professors and about 200 research staff
and PhD students are internationally renowned for their world-class research. This
research is also the basis for an excellent teaching program. Our students bear witness to
the quality and depth of the study program by their excellent job prospects; they directly
influence the quality through dedicated evaluation programs.

Our future research areas will support the following two main fields: Security and Machine
Learning/Artificial Intelligence. This  includes topics such as machine learning for
self-driving  information and communication technologies (ICT) system,  improving
technical products by modern computer science methodologies, integrating ICT into
mechatronic systems, as well as developing secure and dependable systems in general. We
face challenges of scale and complexity in world-wide networks and modern ICT systems as
well as the continuous internationalization and increased speed of software development.

In fundamental research, the Department of Computer Science is engaged in DFG
collaborative research centers, research groups and research training groups. We cooperate
closely with the internationally renowned, interdisciplinary Heinz Nixdorf Institute. In
more application-oriented research, the department is closely aligned with a number of
excellent research institutes such as the Paderborn Center for Parallel Computing (PC²),
the Paderborn Institute for Data Science and Scientific Computing (DaSCO), and the
Software Innovation Campus Paderborn (SICP); SICP in particular builds close links to
local and national IT industry.
