Mentoring programme computer science
Aims and addressees:
The mentoring programme has been institutionalised in order to accompany students through their studies from the first semester onwards by a team consisting of one university lecturer and one member of staff (the so-called mentors). The mentoring programme is intended to provide students with guidance on university studies in general and on the course and content of the computer science degree programme in particular, as well as to provide concrete help in problematic situations. In addition, personal contact is intended to reduce the inhibitions students often have towards professors as early as possible.
Participation in the mentoring programme is compulsory for students on the Bachelor's degree course. The rules for this are described below. Participation in the mentoring programme is strongly recommended for students on Master's degree programmes.
Rules:
Students on the Bachelor's degree programme in Computer Science are obliged to take part in the mentoring programme.
An ECTS point is awarded by the mentor for successful participation according to the following procedure:
- Students regularly attend meetings with their mentor.
- From the second semester onwards, they complete a study planning form at least once a year.
- When registering for the Bachelor's thesis, the student should enclose a certificate from the mentor confirming successful participation in the mentoring programme. If the student has regularly participated in the mentoring programme or has provided evidence of planned study by submitting the planning sheets, he/she will receive the certificate immediately. Otherwise, the mentor will have the course of study explained to him/her. He/she will then decide which achievements the student must provide as appropriate compensation for unsuccessful participation in the mentoring programme by the time the Bachelor's thesis is completed at the latest.
Find mentors:
The mathematics/computer science student council and the mentoring programme working group assign the students of a new year to mentors and establish the first contact between students and mentors during the orientation phase (O phase,"start of studies"). Further meetings of the groups - usually one or two meetings are offered per semester - take place at the invitation of the mentors or as required. The mentors are also available for one-to-one meetings.
If you are studying computer science and would like to take part in the mentoring programme but have not yet been assigned a mentor or have lost contact with your mentor, you can have a mentor assigned to you. To do so, please send an e-mail to one of the following two addresses. The email should contain your first name, surname, degree programme and semester and must have your own email address as the sender. You will then be informed by e-mail who your future mentor is. You will then receive invitations to mentor group meetings from him or her.
- Students in the 1st or 2nd semester of the Bachelor's degree programme in Computer Science send such emails to mentoren-ersties[at]uni-paderborn University.de.
- Students who have enrolled on the Master's degree programme in Computer Science at Paderborn University for the first time should send their request for a mentor to mentoren-master[at]eim.uni-paderborn.de.
- Students in higher semesters on the Bachelor's degree programme in Computer Science or students on the Master's or teacher training programme in Computer Science send such emails to mentoren-oldies[at]uni-paderborn.de.
