Matrix Webchat
The IRB provides a Matrix chat-server for students and staff.
Matrix is a service similar to Slack or Teams and offers a web-based chat interface that allows users to create groups (called rooms) and group rooms into larger spaces.
Access options
Matrix itself is an open protocol and requires the use of a Matrix-compatible client. The IRB provides the Element web-client for this purpose, which also has corresponding mobile and desktop apps.
If you use a client other than the web-client operated by us, you can connect to our server by entering the server address ‘matrix.cs.uni-paderborn.de’ and following the login instructions.
Login is via the IRB GitLab server. To use this, you need to activate the ‘IT services for computer science’ in the ZIM service portal.
Operation of Matrix
Matrix is operated by the Computer Services Department (IRB) for the Institute of Computer Science.
We are currently working on implementing a university-wide Matrix service, provided by the IRB in cooperation with the ZIM for all students and staff at the University of Paderborn.
In the meantime, we also provide access to the Computer Science Matrix for interested students and staff. This requires the activation of the ‘IT Services of Computer Science’ described above.
After completion, we plan to temporarily operate both instances simultaneously to allow a reasonable time window for the switch to the university-wide instance.
User search
Currently, no UPB users can be found via the search function in Matrix. A solution is being worked on. As an alternative, the ZIM username can be determined by searching on our GitLab (top left). The Matrix username can be derived from the ZIM username as follows:
Name: Max Mustermann
ZIM username: mmuster
Matrix username: @mmuster:cs.uni-paderborn.de
