The EKI project was funded by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, with Paderborn University participating alongside other universities and companies. The goal was to increase the energy efficiency of artificial intelligence through the practical use of FPGAs. FPGA stands for Field-Programmable Gate Array. The funding period lasted three years and ended in 2025. Nevertheless, the research will continue.
Professor Dr. Marco Platzner was the project leader at Paderborn University. Having previously conducted research on the topic, he then joined forces with the aforementioned partners to submit a proposal in response to a call for proposals issued by the Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety, and Consumer Protection. This led to the launch of the project, which aimed not only to improve energy efficiency but also to reduce CO2 emissions and shorten the AI’s response time (also known as latency).
